πΈ Before Markdown, markup languages seemed to be “complicated is best”? Maybe because developers think code cannot be simple, or it’s not real code (Is HTML really code? XML, that’s OK). Markdown is a proper noun and a play on words because it is markup π
Markdown is a markup language having its own simple syntax. The intention was to be easy and clear, and so it is. It’s also quicker because you do not need to write a series of tags to specify that the text should be displayed in bold: two characters are enough. HTML is a formatting markup language, while Markdown is a simple writing syntax.
It’s like Notepad: it’s a simple text editor, not a word processor. It’s just good to write Readme files, because there are no formatting features.
I think the good with Markdown (and Notepad) is that you are forced to think and write clearly, to go back to basics. Simplicity becomes evident.
- π “Markdown is a writing format”
- π Reference information is always useful
- π Basics information is useful too
Did you know that Messenger and WhatsApp use a kind of Markdown syntax? I discovered it when framing a word with asterisks in Messenger. More about Messenger Formatting is in the Messenger Help of course or π here.
